Smooth slows a control lane down with separate rise and fall times, so jumpy sensors and buttons stop clicking.
What it does#
The output chases the input. Rise is the time constant while the value is increasing and Fall is the time constant while it is decreasing, each from 0 to 10000 ms. At 0 ms that direction follows the input immediately. Setting Fall longer than Rise gives a quick attack with a slow release. The same smoothing applies to every lane of the input.
When to use it#
Use it after sources that jump, such as a counter, a square LFO or a button, and ahead of anything that would click if the value stepped. For deliberate envelope-like motion on audio level, see Envelope follower.
Ports#
| Port | Direction | Signal | Lanes |
|---|---|---|---|
control | Input | Control | Inferred from the cable |
control | Output | Control | Inferred from the cable |
Parameters#
| Parameter | Label | Range | Default | Unit | Scale | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
rise_ms | Rise | 0 to 10000 | 50 | ms | linear | Time constant while the value is increasing. |
fall_ms | Fall | 0 to 10000 | 200 | ms | linear | Time constant while the value is decreasing. |
Rise (rise_ms)#
The time constant, in milliseconds, while the value is going up. 0 to 10000.
Fall (fall_ms)#
The time constant, in milliseconds, while the value is going down. 0 to 10000.
Tips#
- Use a short Rise and a long Fall for a lingering release.
- Set both to 0 to pass the signal straight through.

Help patches
Each help patch is an ordinary Toy that teaches one idea. The diagram shows the Patch; the preview shows its Frame. Open it in TuneToys to play and edit it.
1. Soften a square wave
beginner Teaches: rise_ms, fall_ms
A square control wave is smoothed with separate rise and fall times.
Connections as text
- Oscillator audio output connected to Patch outputs audio input
- Control LFO control output connected to Smooth control input
- A square LFO jumps between two values.
- Rise and Fall round off the up and down edges separately.
Related nodes
- Scale Map a control range onto another with a curve, clamp and inversion. Depth and offset for any modulation.
- Control LFO A free-running or tempo-synced low-frequency oscillator on a control lane, 0 to 1, with depth, offset, phase, skew, random shapes and a reset input.
- Envelope follower Track the level of an audio bundle as one control lane per channel, with attack and release.
