Constant as the Patch draws it, at default values: inlets on the left, outlets on the right.

Constant outputs a fixed control vector of up to eight lanes. It is the number box of the control domain.

What it does#

Each lane has its own value from 0 to 1, set in the inspector or from a Frame control. Lane 1 takes Value 1, lane 2 takes Value 2 and so on, up to eight. A lane only exists when the node has at least that many lanes, so values beyond the node's lane count do nothing. The output never changes unless a control is moved.

When to use it#

Use it as a fixed operand for Math, as a base value to scale, or as a source that you can drive from a Frame control and cable into the control graph.

Parameters#

ParameterLabelRangeDefaultUnitScaleNotes
value1Value 10 to 10linearLane 1 of the output when the node has at least 1 lanes.
value2Value 20 to 10linearLane 2 of the output when the node has at least 2 lanes.
value3Value 30 to 10linearLane 3 of the output when the node has at least 3 lanes.
value4Value 40 to 10linearLane 4 of the output when the node has at least 4 lanes.
value5Value 50 to 10linearLane 5 of the output when the node has at least 5 lanes.
value6Value 60 to 10linearLane 6 of the output when the node has at least 6 lanes.
value7Value 70 to 10linearLane 7 of the output when the node has at least 7 lanes.
value8Value 80 to 10linearLane 8 of the output when the node has at least 8 lanes.

Values (value1 to value8)#

Lane 1 to lane 8 of the output: value1, value2, value3, value4, value5, value6, value7 and value8. Each runs from 0 to 1 and defaults to 0. Only the lanes the node actually has are output.

Tips#

  • Use several Constants, or one with more lanes, to hold a set of related values, then pull lanes apart with Select lanes.
  • For values outside 0 to 1, follow the Constant with Scale.

Each help patch is an ordinary Toy that teaches one idea. The diagram shows the Patch; the preview shows its Frame. Open it in TuneToys to play and edit it.

  • Scale Map a control range onto another with a curve, clamp and inversion. Depth and offset for any modulation.
  • Math Arithmetic on any signal, lane by lane: add, multiply, divide, power and more on audio or control operands. The output runs at the rate of its fastest input.
  • Combine lanes Concatenate two control bundles, preserving every lane without mixing.
