Desktop app, Player and Installer Planned

The desktop app (Editor and Installer) for macOS, Windows and Linux, the DAW Player, and what is qualified so far.

Status: The desktop app runs the full editor and the Installer in macOS development builds; Windows and Linux builds are set up and not yet built. Public downloads start with the first signed release; Download always shows what is available. The DAW Player core builds locally; DAW, system browser and WebView qualification are still open.

The desktop app#

The desktop app is the same editor you use at tune.toys, bundled so it opens without a browser tab, plus the Installer.

  • Editor window. Choose File → New Editor Window (Cmd+N on a Mac, Ctrl+N elsewhere). Everything works as in the browser: Patch, Frame, Preview, Source, audio and MIDI.
  • Native menus. The editor's File, Edit, View, Patch, Window and Help menus become the app's own menus: in the macOS menu bar (with Settings in the application menu) and in each window's menu bar on Windows and Linux. Undo, Redo and Select All edit a text field when one has focus.
  • Your account. The desktop app talks to the platform you choose in the Installer's settings. If the platform cannot be reached, account features say so; editing on this computer keeps working.

Where it installs and how it updates#

SystemInstalls toUpdates
macOSWherever you put TuneToys.app, usually ApplicationsRestart to update verifies the new version's signature and swaps it in
WindowsYour account's programs folder; no administrator promptRestart to update runs the verified installer silently and reopens the app
LinuxThe AppImage wherever you keep it, or /opt/TuneToys from the .debThe AppImage replaces itself on Restart to update; the .deb shows a notice with a download link, so your package manager stays in charge

Every update is checked against the signed release feed, its file digest and, on macOS and Windows, the publisher's code signature before anything changes. Copies from an app store update through that store instead.

The Installer#

The Installer keeps purchased and free products up to date and manages licenses offline.

  • Downloads are verified by digest and signature before use.
  • Licenses are certificates tied to your account and device; they are refreshed online and keep working offline for a stated period.
  • Show Installer in the File menu brings it back from any editor window.

The Player#

The Player loads Toys inside a DAW or as a standalone app, rendering the same Frame and running the same engine as the browser. Pages for targets that are not qualified say so; features are never described as working before they are.

Follow progress in Releases.
