# MIDI channel

> Pass every channel, keep one channel, or move everything onto one channel.

Source: https://docs.tune.toys/nodes/midi.channel/

MIDI channel passes every channel, keeps one channel, or moves everything onto one channel.

## What it does

Mode chooses what happens to channel information. Pass all leaves messages untouched. Only channel drops every message that is not on Channel. Remap to channel rewrites every channel message onto Channel. Channel runs from 1 to 16 and has no effect in Pass all.

## When to use it

Use it to isolate one part of a multi-channel controller, or to label a source with its own channel before merging, or to line a stream up with a [MIDI to control](https://docs.tune.toys/nodes/midi.to-control/) node that listens on one channel.

## Ports

<!-- ports:start -->

| Port | Direction | Signal | Lanes |
| ------ | --------- | ------ | ---------------- |
| `midi` | Input | MIDI | 16 MIDI channels |
| `midi` | Output | MIDI | 16 MIDI channels |

| `channel` | Channel | 1 to 16 | 1 | | linear | The channel kept or assigned. |

### Mode (`mode`)

Pass all, Only channel or Remap to channel. A discrete choice.

### Channel (`channel`)

The channel kept or assigned, 1 to 16. Unused in Pass all.

## Tips

- Use Only channel to split a controller's zones into separate instruments.
- Remap a single-channel source to a different channel so it can be told apart after a merge.
